Bought a used, trade-in 448 Baler with low count and all the bells and whistles from the local dealer. 2012 MY, less than 3000 total bales. Mega wide pickup, hydraulic lift, floatation tire kit , High-Moisture kit, etc etc... If there was an option that baler could come with in 2012, this one has it.

Kinja'd!!!

JD offers factory f inance on used equipment taken i n trade at the dealership. T he credit terms for 48 months were very attractive, and the offer price was very reasonable too . Significantly l ess than half what a new one costs, the paint’s not even worn off the pickup yet. This is my first Big Green implement... I hope I didn’t make a mistake. At least it doesn’t have any proprietary, encrypted ECU software like the tractors.

It reminds me of the Snapper ride on we just sold.   15+ years old, and still on the original tires. There were NO scrape marks or paint imperfections when we got it from the estate of a hoarder. It is gone now in favor of a free John  deer double blade ride on.

7.3L Engine.....nice!!! How many bales per gallon?

/s (just in case)

I spent a few weeks each summer as a wee small child in the NY Catskills, used to get rides on an Allis Chalmers tractor that had all kinds of scary, dangerous equipment that was towed behind it. “Don’t fall in there” was the advice I got. Good advice for a six-year old.

Turns out hay balers are way better investments than stocks, at least if today is an indication

Resale value of well-cared-for farm equipment is astronomical. It makes Honda residuals look bad. The difference is; the market may yet go back up...

Now that is a score. And you've missed the worst of the depreciation too.

Nice baler . Do you have an old-timey rake with a saddle that someone sits on while operating the manual trip? Fond memories of being chewed-out by my Grandpa for tripping the rake at the wrong time and not getting the rows straight...lol.

One time, I was working on upgrading a pump unit for a client of mine. The new pump required more HP than the John Deere 6068H was rated for. I went to the dealer and told them I wanted a price on a higher HP engine. “Oh, we’ll just charge you for 30 more HP and come by and flash the ECU.” And that’s the day I learned that you’re paying by the horse power and the unit you are buying is electronically limited to the amount of horsepowers you’ve purchased for it.

I’d wait until seeing what the bale out looks like.

As a software developer, that kind of stuff makes me unhappy. Whatever happened to trying to make the best product possible?

Haha, no dump rake... though I do have an ancient Grimm tedder and a 60's vintage Ford side-rake.

John Deere’s software policy is a bit nuts. I don’t think I’d ever buy one of their new tractors, but this baler looks nice...

Nothing. It’s just the tractor client is often looking at different horsepower ranges. So it’s cheaper to manufacture one chassis and driveline then offer two or three different HP ratings and a hydraulic supply system to suit... suddenly three different models for not much additional cost but wildly different margins...

That's why tractors typically come in series...with each series containing three to four models.

I’d agree. I recall a seemingly harmless hay ride resulting in a concussion for someone.

Damn city- folk.

Intel did this around a decade ago (I feel like it used to be a thing further in the past as well, but I can’t search for that): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Upgrade_Service

And of course in the software world their have definitely been cases of shipping software and making the customer pay to unlock later.

I’m sure there a tons of general examples as well. One that comes to mind is Tesla Model S P60s being the same as P75s but with the battery locked at a lower capacity unless you pay for an upgrade.
